Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning on Nintendo Switch is a decent remastering effort of a game that, while largely excellent for its time, hasn’t aged flawlessly. Some of this is the unavoidable battering of time, but other things, such as the lack of a target lock, feel like improvements that could have, and should have, been implemented.

A Lengthy Tale to Satisfy That RPG Thirst. In Kingdoms of Amalur you follow the journey of the “Fateless One.”. Prior to the start of the adventure, you are deceased. When you start the game you awaken on a pile of corpses, revived by a device called the Well of Souls, created by a gnomish scientist called Fomorous Hugues.

In Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, you play as the Fateless One- a created character recently risen from the dead with the ability to defy destiny and basically do whatever you want. It’s a neat way to contextualize player choice within the story and what follows is a fun romp across the medieval style fantasy world of Amalur, doing quests

The total antithesis to a Soulsbourne game, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning throws away stamina systems, punishing block/parry mechanics and soul-destroying enemies in favour of just some good ol’ fashioned fantasy violence. Again, rather than some convoluted multi-button combat system, Amalur keeps it simple.

The graphics and camera system show their age but the rich world, smooth combat system, and huge amount of content within make this trip to save Amalur worth it for any RPG lover out there. *Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The biggest disappointment with Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, unfortunately, comes from the technical side of things rather than visuals. Visually speaking, because the game is colorful and features a fairy tale fantasy world, it has aged well and still looks decent considering the game’s age thanks to its art direction.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning gives the cult-classic RPG a second chance for the world to experience the epic tale from Forgotten Realms author R.A. Salvatore and comic book legend Todd McFarlane.
The odd interesting tidbit was not enough to stave off the weariness of repetition.
